Side Note:
These agility & skills courses/exercises are designed to help develop the fundamental riding skills of clutch, throttle, brake and active balance by the rider.
Precise practice in coordinating these techniques can lead to instinctive/reflexive actions by the rider and allow for more precise control of the motorcycle.
Mastery of these techniques allows the rider to more smoothly transition the bike when cornering as well as being able to react reflexively when encountering unexpected changes in surface traction in off road conditions.
Depending on your skill level, you may want to make the courses larger to feel more comfortable while you develop these skills.
Performing these exercises carries a risk of dropping your motorcycle which may result in damage to you or your motorcycle. Always be sure that your bike has the proper crash guards and that you also wear the appropriate protective gear.

    Questions: *2nd gear even on a low power bike? (250-650cc) *My bike's recommended tire pressures are 29psi front and rear. How much lower would you recommend? (tube)

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz 7 днів тому

      Typically on smaller bikes starting in first gear is ok👍. Depends on how the gearing is set up. On my Kove 450 Rally, I find myself in first gear frequently on re-starts or technical slow stuff. The 450 KTM bikes I've ridden... second gear starts. For sure, all the "adventure" bikes I've riden in sand- 2nd gear re-starts. Try your bike in second gear, if it boggs down, go with 1st. I don't like to ride on a soft tire. I find when the sidewall is squirming around it masks what I want to actually be feeling from the traction side of things. Try going to 20psi and see how that feels.

    Quick question. I dropped my bike, started getting a leak. The screw was bent. And I replaced with oem new one. (The valve cover guard screw). Started getting even more leaking. So checked it out and also checked out the other side which was unwrapped and was also leaking. I guess I may have over tighten it? I didn't do it to specs. Just super hand tight.

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz 17 днів тому

      These bolts are easy to break by over tightening them. BMW manual says 10 Nm which isn’t much. To check the bolt, back it off a turn or two, then re-tighten to spec. If you do not have a torque wrench, stop the instant you feel the shoulder portion of the bolt touch. Once the shoulder touches no further tightening will increase pressure on the gasket portion of the bolt. The compression of the gaskets creates tension on the bolt and it should not leak. If there is still a leak or weeping oil, check valve cover gasket positioning or replace it if it is worn.

  • @mikefoltynski
    @mikefoltynski 19 днів тому

    I'm sorry for adding a different perspective. If you compress your suspension and in essence execute the beginning of a wheelie, the front end has to come back down and ends up going deeper into the sand, possibly losing control. I think putting weight back, heels down and smooth over the sand with smooth power to the back wheel may be a better option.

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz 19 днів тому

      👍🏻 Thanks for joining the conversation! You have made some excellent points. There is no “one way” about it. Some entries into a sand transition do not need a suspension compression before hand, just a blip of throttle 👍🏻 Seems I may have enough material here to do a follow up video 😅

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz 19 днів тому

      At the 3:12 mark in the video, I cross the sand without compressing the suspension because the sand was not deep. Just needed the blip of throttle. When entering a deep soft patch, it’s almost like doing a belly flop 😅 The whole bike will sink in and then the burst of throttle lifts it up and gets you underway. Without performing the suspension compression, the front end just spears into the sand. This is especially true on the leeward side of dunes where the sand is very soft.

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz 19 днів тому

      Take a look at the suspension compression I use at 0:19 mark in the opening of the video. Without getting that little bit of lift, I would have just driven into the sand like Wile E. Coyote😅

    • @advmotoskillz

    Ive tried the big bike off road thing, its just not for me. 40 years on 2 strokes off road, why would I want a 500 lb or 600 lb bike? Marketing has done a great job selling these monsters. Too many friends have broke themselves playing dirtbiker on huge bikes. I got a new 690, much more like a dirtbike.

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz Місяць тому

      Completely understand. I didn’t start out riding on dirt bikes, and I find them uncomfortable to ride 😅. It all comes down to the style of riding you enjoy. I have been trying my hand at dirt bikes lately, and they certainly need a different approach than an ADV bike. It all comes down to: the more a rider develops their skill, the more enjoyable the ride is, no matter what discipline!

    What is the minimum square size for this exercise? For a GS series motorcycle, 1250GSA for example. And what is the standard for the GS cup? 5 meters? 4 meters?

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz Місяць тому

      5 meters for both. Be sure to check out our “GS Trophy Exercises - Motorcycle Training Skills For Competition and Adventure Off-Road Riding” if you are looking for some training ideas for the Trophy ua-cam.com/video/GWiz8XG1tcs/v-deo.html

    I'm short for my bike and cant get to lean it alot before the weight becomes too heavy to support the bike on 1 leg when doing the Elephant turn while ontop of the bike. D:

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz Місяць тому

      Being short does add an extra challenge! Holding up a heavy bike is not easy, this is why I prefer to do the elephant turn standing. 🤙

    Really detailed video, the best sand riding video I have seen. Some of this I understood but it provided a lot more, particularly the different riding of the dune faces. Slowing down clutch is something I will try from now on.

    Does abs matter?? Hinder ?? Or help??

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz Місяць тому

      For maximum stopping on off road, rear ABS off is best. As the rear wheel is locked up, dirt builds up in front of the rear tire and helps it stop. f the ABS is on the rear brek will disengage to keep the rear wheel from sliding and the stoppig distance beomes much longer. Newer bikes equiped with front brake off road ABS is very effective though.
